Chapter 4 Continued: Still in Caye Caulker

sunny 33 °C

This is our last day on Caye Caulker. It's surely been a laid back and interesting time. Ray is now a certified diver and is exploring local reserve today. However, after a week of 'going slow' (island's motto!), we are looking forward to going further. We plan to leave for Guatemala tomorrow morning, the next destination being the famous Tikal.

We'll speak to you soon!

4 Skyriaus tesinys: vis dar Caye Caulker

overcast 33 °C

Sveiki dar karta...siandie musu paskutine diena Caye Caulker. Visa savaite cia praleidom. Niekas tikrai niekur neskuba, salos sukis - 'Judek letai' ('Go Slow'). Bendra kultura, manau, panasi i Jamaikos. Aplink daug Bob Marley pasekeju.

Vienas is sventes 'viniu' buvo Mis Omaras (Miss Lobster) rinkimai. O siaip - daugiau nei paprastai suvenyru stalu, daug alaus, romo ir garsios muzikos. Dar matem krepsinio varzybas - krepsinio aikstele neabejotinai egzotiskiausia, kuria kol kas esam mate. Ant juros kranto, tarp palmiu.. Nuotraukas galite pamatyt cia: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gretuks . Dar isivaizduokit nakties tamsuma ir pridekit geltona menulio pilnati virs palmes :) Krepsinis buvo greitas, juodas, emocionalus. Gloste mums lietuviams sirdi ;)

Jau pripratom! Ryt planuojam traukt i Gvatemala.

Pridejau nuotrauku cia, labai kvieciam apsilankyti: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gretuks . Truputi pasimaise su senom, bet gal nieko ;)

Iki!

Chapter 4: Belize

33 °C

Belize is where we live at ease, said a German passenger on the bus from Chetumal (Mexico) to Belize City (Belize). He's been living in Hopkins (Belize) for 4 years, running an internet cafe and a windsurfing school, and is a permanent resident in Belize.

But is living in Belize really that easy and laid back? The usual way to reach Caye Caulker is go via Belize City from where you catch a water taxi to the island. Travellers do not tend to stay in the City for longer than one night - and one can understand why. I haven't travelled much so I have never seen such a depressed city. It looks abandoned, grim, dirty, buildings almost falling apart. You can feel a huge rate of unemployment. To my eyes, this is not laid back. It is sad.

A model of Europeans, Americans, Canadians leaving everything behind in their home countries and opening their businesses abroad seems quite popular here in Belize. It is especially visible on the island called Caye Caulker where we are spending one more week in the Caribbean sun (and some tropical storms as well!). The island is small but has all necessary services (ATM, pharmacy, clinic, police, internet, even photographers for weddings). Food stores market is clearly dominated by Chinese. You can buy property, even small private islands. I can't stop thinking that foreign influence deprives locals of opportunities to run businesses other than souvenir or fresh juice stalls or hair braiding.
No paved streets, mostly wooden houses, small shops give you a seaside village feeling. The only transport here are golf carts, bycicles, all sorts of boats. And, of course, bare feet.

This is surely divers' and snorkelers' paradise - the unique coral reefs are just a boat ride away, and you can even swim with sharks, manatees (sea cows) and sting rays. Ray is now learning to dive and is really happy. If you choose not to snorkel or dive (like me), you can see rays right at the seaside at night, elegantly floating around the wooden piers, and maybe meet a crab or two on the streets. The beach is still not very friendly - if you are looking for a soft sand to lie on, I'd recommend Mexican coast.

We happened to arrive to Caye Caulker just in time for the annual Lobster Fest. The highlight yesterday was traditional Miss Lobster elections and a highly increased number of grills and souvenir stalls on the main street. You can get a reasonable size grilled lobster for 30 Belize dollars (and up) (=15 USD or approx. 7.5 GBP). Apart from that, it looks like just a good chance to have a party with loud music. And go slow, which seems to be this island's motto.

4 Skyrius: Belizas - Caye Caulker

sunny 30 °C

Mes jau Belize! Atvykom kiek greiciau nei planavom, tiesiai is Tulumo (Meksika), tik pakeitem autobusus Chetumalyje (Meksika).

Kita ryta, nueje pirkt laivelio bilietu i Caye Caulker, susivokem, kad nepasukom laikrodziu valanda atgal. Nenardysiu, patingesiu geriau ant kranto :)

Sala labai miela. Tingus net sakyciau.

3 Skyrius: Tulum

sunny 30 °C
View El Mundo Latino on GRai's travel map.

Ryt jau traukiam i Chetumal, o is ten siausim i Beliza. Dar siek tiek Karibu saules! Ten ir susitiksim :)

Iki!

P.S. Cia keletas nuotrauku pagaliau:
